A Personal Message: The Mentor I Wish I Had

I want to start by saying thank you for taking the initiative to get UNSTUCK.

I am here to be the mentor I wish I had 20 years ago. Throughout my 35-year journey, from the grit of being a frontline pipefitter foreman to the boardroom as a Chief Innovation Officer; I have mentored dozens of professionals. My proudest accomplishment isn’t a specific project or a software launch; it is seeing those individuals evolve into industry leaders at major construction firms and technology providers.

UNSTUCK is more than just a newsletter. It is an ecosystem designed to support your transformation from a technician into a strategic Operational Integrator and leader. My mission is to help others succeed, and my reward is knowing I did something to help you achieve your goals.

But this ecosystem only works if we are honest about our hurdles. I want to know: Where are you stuck? DM me or share it within our community portal. I am here to help you move forward.

Inspire One Person at a Time.

Achieving Organizational Flow: The OpEx5 OS™

To navigate the complexities of the modern jobsite, we use the OpEx5 OS™. This is a proven system developed over 20 years of integrating operational excellence, knowledge management, and digital transformation. Its primary purpose is to achieve organizational flow, ensuring that information and materials move through your company with the precision of a living organism. When a firm achieves flow, it moves beyond "automated chaos" and begins to operate with true agility.

The foundation of this operating system is the 5 Pillar Strategy™ (or 5P Strategy). This is a holistic mindset for problem-solving that can be applied to almost any business process, from developing case studies and sharing knowledge to leading daily meetings. I even use it in my personal life for setting goals and thinking through complex problems. By viewing any obstacle through the lens of Purpose, People, Process, Platform, and Performance, you ensure your solution is built to scale.

We achieve this through five interdependent pillars:

  • Purpose (The DNA): Aligning the "Strategic Why" from the frontline to the C-Suite.

  • People (The Heart & Muscles): Empowering "Knowledge Architects" to capture and share expert wisdom.

  • Process (The Metabolism): Relentlessly eliminating the 8 wastes of D.O.W.N.T.I.M.E.

  • Platform (The Digital Nervous System): Using technology for visual communication, collaboration, and speed.

  • Performance (The Vital Signs): Measuring "Time to Value" through real-time dashboards and cost-aversion reporting.

This Week's Breakthrough: The Point of Release

This brings us to our first application of the 5P Strategy: The Point of Release.

From "Double-Clicker" to Strategic Leader: The Secret of the SECI Spiral
April 27, 2026 - ALOHA MONDAY! Early in my career, I was given a nickname by a project team that still sticks with me today: The “Double-Clicker.” At the time, it wasn't a compliment. I remember sitting in a high-stakes project meeting when the Project Manager looked me dead in the eye and said, “I’m not sure why you are here. Your time is taking money directly out of my bonus.” Later that afte...
The Secret to AEC Innovation: Mastering Tacit Knowledge
April 20, 2026 - ALOHA MONDAY! I recently stepped away for a brief hiatus to dive into new client partnerships and a personal passion project, but you were never far from my mind. This topic is your golden ticket, if you’re ready to accept the mission. Buckle up; we’ve curated a high-impact mentor lab video for you. Plus, keep an eye out for a follow-up explainer on Ikujiro Nonaka’s SECI model,...
Engineering Continuous Improvement with the After-Action Review (AAR)
March 23, 2026 - ALOHA MONDAY! Stop treating every project like an isolated, one-off event. In the AEC industry, we often struggle with knowledge management because our "tribal experts" are too busy to share insights, and we end up losing the hard-earned lessons from one project before the next one begins. Coming up short on a project hurts, but in that moment of failure—or even unexpected succ...
