March 16, 2026 - ALOHA MONDAY!

In the fast-evolving world of Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC), true innovation isn't just about adopting the latest technology. It's about a systematic approach to problem-solving and change management that ensures our efforts translate into scalable, repeatable, and impactful results.

That's why I'm excited to share a methodology I've learned, applied and refined over the past 20 years: The 5 Pillar Strategy. This framework is more than just a buzzword; it's a mindset designed to guide AEC innovators like you through complex challenges, transforming good ideas into operational excellence.

What is the 5 Pillar Strategy?

The 5 Pillar Strategy is a way to think about what we do, why we do it, how we do it and most importantly, who we do it for! This is a mindset or approach to thinking.

It reminds us that innovation is just an invention until it is scaled and operationalized.

In operational excellence, there are 5 key steps that lead to success. Over the years, I've reframed these to simplify and use them in almost everything I do at work and even in my personal life. It’s a great way to approach solving any problem that can be applied to enable effective change management. It’s one thing to improve a process and solve a problem, but it is an entirely different thing to operationalize this and scale it.

Where to Apply the 5P Strategy?

The beauty of the 5P Strategy lies in its versatility. While I primarily use it to tackle complex challenges at work, I've also found it incredibly powerful for personal goal-setting and problem-solving. It's a lens through which you can analyze any situation requiring a structured approach:

At Work
  • Developing a New Service Offering: How do you move from a client need to a repeatable, valuable service?

  • Implementing New Technology (e.g., AI, VR): Beyond just buying software, how do you ensure it truly transforms workflows and delivers results?

  • Improving an Existing Process: Tackling inefficiencies in RFI management, model coordination, or project closeout.

  • Client Project Planning: Ensuring a deep understanding of client goals, team capabilities, and execution strategy.

In Your Personal Life
  • Learning a New Skill: What's your purpose, who are your mentors, what's your learning process, what tools will you use, and what's the desired outcome?

  • Planning a Major Life Event: Organizing a move, a renovation, or even a complex trip.

  • Achieving a Fitness Goal: Defining your purpose, understanding your body, creating a workout process, using the right equipment, and measuring your progress.

This framework is about empowering you to think critically, systematically, and empathetically in any situation.

From "Double-Clicker" to Strategic Leader: The Secret of the SECI Spiral
April 27, 2026 - ALOHA MONDAY! Early in my career, I was given a nickname by a project team that still sticks with me today: The “Double-Clicker.” At the time, it wasn't a compliment. I remember sitting in a high-stakes project meeting when the Project Manager looked me dead in the eye and said, “I’m not sure why you are here. Your time is taking money directly out of my bonus.” Later that afte...

This topic is your golden ticket, if you’re ready to accept the mission. Buckle up; we’ve curated a high-impact mentor lab video for you. Plus, keep an eye out for a follow-up explainer on Ikujiro Nonaka’s SECI model,...
Engineering Continuous Improvement with the After-Action Review (AAR)
March 23, 2026 - ALOHA MONDAY! Stop treating every project like an isolated, one-off event. In the AEC industry, we often struggle with knowledge management because our "tribal experts" are too busy to share insights, and we end up losing the hard-earned lessons from one project before the next one begins. Coming up short on a project hurts, but in that moment of failure—or even unexpected succ...
